Nick Of Time Heroes Of The Line Book 1 edition by J A Carlton Children eBooks Reviews

My mother purchased this book for me to read while I was recovering from surgery. All I can say is it was great for helping me to go to sleep. I'm glad she only spent $4.99 - but even that was too much. Even though I read it from begining to end, this book definitely failed to capture or hold my interest. The other reviews for this book have left my a bit bewildered. They must be friends of the author. I will not be passing my copy along but rather donating it to Good Will.
Nick, of Time is an exciting adventure with a side heaping of brother adorableness. Two small boys destined for more than they could possibly have imagined. Young Nick, a true little hero in the making and protective big brother of adorable, sweet Frankie has yet to discover what lies ahead for the Emersons. Unfortunately, he'll have to face the past before he can embrace the future.

It's a story of brothers, of love, of courage, with a swirl of fantasy thrown in to make for an engaging tale of triumph. I was literally on the edge of my seat shouting out my encouragement to the two intrepid young heroes.

You can't help but fall in love with Nick and Frankie!
I have just finished reading and have thoroughly enjoyed the novel, Nick, Of Time, Heroes Of The Line, Book 1 by JA Carlton. What this author does better than any other I've read is she shows in perfectly placed words, the love, adoration, trust and friendship the young heroes of this story have for each other. She seems to know the mind of young boys, and brings that forth with sincerity and skill, so that we ride along beside these boys, cringe when they cringe and smile when they smile.
The memories and fears of a young boy - the vivid, so real and lifelike imagination, make the scary things that much scarier, since I also remember how real those scary things were when I was six years old.
From the book - "One look at his little brother's tightly crossed arms and tear-streaked face had Nick on his knees looking into his little one's glistening eyes." Passages like this abound in this tale of love, bravery, and undying commitment.
The author creates characters and the world in which they live so life like, that I think about them even when I put the book down.
Nick and his younger brother Frankie are descendants in a long line of warriors who possess powers. These powers are sought after by the schades, evil beings who pursue the young boys, at first during dreams and visions, but later during waking hours.
One skill this author has thoroughly perfected is conveying emotion to the reader. Not only do I care about these people, but when they hurt I hurt, when they cry I cry. She has an uncommon knack for knowing what to say and how to say it. An example "Come on, shrimp, let's go see our room, huh? He turned Frank toward the stairs giving him a tiny push before looking back at his mother. "Promise." With her hand over mouth and tears running down her cheeks, she nodded." It's writing like this that kept me turning pages and rooting for the young heroes.
As a hero of the line, Nick is descended from special warriors in a special army - who saved the world five thousand years ago. This time, they must try again.
Another example of the author's work "He could almost feel it moving through the air, the faintest chill you'd never notice until it breathes just under the surface of your space, the almost imperceptible sensation of subatomic particles colliding that we call instinct."
When it comes to portraying the bad guy, Ms. Carlton has her fingers on the pulse of this ruined person. Just the mention of his name, brings chills down my spine.
If you get excited about well-crafted, edge of your seat suspense/thriller and young person heroics, Nick, Of Time, Heroes Of The Line, Book 1 by JA Carlton is a can't miss for you. I strongly recommend this book, and am looking forward to reading book 2.
Geoffrey Zimmerman, Author and Screenwriter
"...please, won't somebody help me?" his voice barely touched the darkened space while he did his very best to hold back the fear that always came when he was alone. Frank Emerson didn't want to cry, he didn't like to cry; and even if Nick said it was okay sometimes, he never cried without good reason - and there was nothing more that Frankie wanted than to be like his big brother. But Nick never got thrown into a smelly, old dumpster either. It wouldn't have been so
bad if it'd been the one by the main doors of the Robert Townsend Elementary School. That was where they threw out the papers and dittos and stuff, so it wasn't so bad in there. But for some reason, Tommy Haywood and Bruce Evans always made sure to toss him into the one behind the lunch room, into stinky old piles of half-rotted food and gross stuff from snotty pasta to curdled milk. And sometimes there was stuff he really didn't want to think about, stuff that was mixed in with the saw dust Harry used to clean up when someone got sick.'

Nick, of Time introduces the reader to two young brothers who, when we first meet them, are deep into the task of navigating life with an absentee parent while surrounded by playground bullies and their mom's creepy boyfriend. There's nothing Nick wouldn't do to care for and protect his little brother, including running interference to keep that creepy boyfriend away from Frank.

As if tending their daily trials and needs weren't enough, one day a friend, in the guise of the school janitor threatens to expose the shame Nick keeps buried from his brother all while revealing a destiny that any adult would find more than a little daunting. Nick and Frank were born from an ancient line of heroes who once saved the world of light and all its inhabitants from the clutches of the malevolent Living Dark and its sinister minions, the Schades. Once again,
the world of light is in danger, and these two young boys must embrace their destinies as one, to save it and all they hold dear.

Throughout the series the recurring theme is family, friendship, and the power of love to heal and overcome any hurt. There are also occasional glimpses into how even a small window of abusive behavior can leave scars and pains that echo forward in unfathomable ways. I also want to make you aware that 30% of all the author'sroyalties from Nick, of Time go to the prevention of child abuse through the "Heroes of the Line" campaign.
You might think that this book follows the wave that has already been, kids powers and the yada yada, but you are SO WRONG! Nick of time is a book with amazing characters that you have never seen before, the book has everything from the family problems to two boys in need to save the world due to their blood line!

I can not wait for the second book, I am glad I bought this one and will be on the lookout for the next one as well!
5 stars! WICKED COOL!
